A Black mother with a fair-skinned daughter decided to take a DNA test after critics questioned whether the child was truly hers.
Alex, a mother of three, and her husband Rob, who is white, welcomed their daughter Pudge Pudge, now 2, through IVF.
The couple expressed being ‘surprised’ by how ‘different’ Pudge Pudge looked, especially when compared to their other two children, who have darker skin.
“I was super surprised,” Alex told Truly. “Her ears weren’t even dark. They were really, really white!”
Because of the contrast in their skin tones, Alex shared that she faces “a lot of negativity” from both online trolls and people in her daily life.
Alex recalled an incident when she was shopping at the mall with Pudge Pudge and was stopped by a staff member, who said “things didn’t look right” and threatened to call security.
“Rob ended up handling the whole thing for me and essentially told her to leave us alone,” Alex said. “I should be able to hang out with my child the way I want to!”
She also shared that she has faced criticism from other Black people, who have attacked her for being in an interracial relationship.
“I’ve seen people online who appear to be Black say I shouldn’t have had that white man’s child, all kinds of things,” Alex shared.
She has also been accused of “renting” Pudge Pudge as a “content baby” for her social media.
To put the rumors to rest, Alex and Rob decided to get a DNA test to prove that Pudge Pudge was indeed their child.
“We decided to do the DNA test because she was so white, and we used IVF to get pregnant with her, and mistakes do happen,” she explained.
Despite facing backlash and awkward moments, the couple has received an overwhelming amount of support after sharing their story.
“As a Black mom with a ‘white-passing’ child living in a primarily white area in Georgia, this happens every day,” one person wrote. “Being followed to listen in on our conversations, asking where her mom is, suggesting I’m a nanny, etc. Keep your head up, momma. Your family is beautiful.”
Another commenter said, “I can understand people being confused, but being rude is crossing the line. This is a sweet and beautiful family!”
A third supporter commented, “People are so weird. They have no idea how mixed children work. You two are doing amazing. Donโt listen to the weirdos.”
Many others also pointed out that Pudge Pudge looks exactly like her father.
“She looks like daddy. People are so ignorant,” wrote one fan, while another added, “She looks EXACTLY like her dad! That’s so sweet. Some strong genes for sure.”
