Jenna Ortega addressed the rumors circulating about her being in a relationship with fellow actor Johnny Depp.
Last year, the celebrity gossip account Deuxmoi shared an anonymous tip alleging that Jenna Ortega and Johnny Depp were seen together on a date.
Deuxmoi, known for sharing unverified tips, clearly states in their Instagram bio: “Some statements made on this account have not been independently confirmed. This account does not claim information published is based in fact.”
Despite the disclaimer, people ran with the rumors, leading to a wave of articles about Ortega supposedly addressing her alleged relationship with Depp.
In a recent interview with BuzzFeed while promoting her latest film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Ortega addressed the situation when asked about the craziest rumor she had ever heard about herself.
“Probably that I was in a serious relationship with Johnny Depp and that I wanted everyone to ‘leave us alone,’” the Wednesday actress responded.
“It’s so insane to me, like I never spoke on that, I never said anything like that,” she added.
“Articles really do just make up their own quotes, but I thought that was pretty hilarious,” she said.
“I was on set with [co-star] Richard E. Grant, and he came up to me and said, ‘Oh, so you and Johnny,’ and I laughed because—I don’t know that person,” she continued.
Fans online are clearly enjoying Ortega’s response, especially her comment, “I don’t know that person.”
One Twitter user commented, “She really said, ‘I’ve never heard of that man in my life.'”
Another user added, “She’s so genuine, but how sick and twisted do you have to be to make something like that up?” At the time of the rumors, Ortega was just 21, while Depp was 60.
“Now that’s how you shut down a dating rumor,” another user chimed in.
Ortega has previously stated that she plans to keep her love life private, explaining that she worries discussing it might overshadow her work.
In a 2024 interview with Vanity Fair, the actress shared, “I don’t plan on discussing my love life publicly because that’s my personal business.”
She added, “When you know too much about someone’s personal life, it can taint how you see their work; it’s the worst when you can only see the celebrity side of them.”
