Neil Patrick Harris Explains Why He Doesn’t Want To Know Which Twin Is Biologically His

Neil Patrick Harris has shared his reasons for not wanting to know which of his twins is biologically his.

Harris is widely recognized for his roles in popular U.S. TV shows like How I Met Your Mother and for his role in the 2014 mystery thriller Gone Girl.

Throughout his career, he has earned numerous accolades, including a Tony Award and five Primetime Emmy Awards.

Harris is also recognized as a trailblazer in LGBTQ+ rights, being one of the first high-profile figures to start a family with his same-sex partner.

The actor from A Series of Unfortunate Events and his partner, David Burtka, have been together since 2004.

Two years later, Harris publicly came out as gay in an exclusive interview with People magazine, where he stated, “I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love.”

The Smurfs star and Burtka began their relationship as friends, but it quickly evolved into something more. They went public with their romance in 2007.

On The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Harris discussed how he managed to come out while still preserving his privacy.

“I’m not a very scandalous person, so I didn’t want to deal with responding to any sensational stories,” he said. “I just made a statement and kind of put out the fires.”

“My life had been relatively open within my own circle. I’d been dating the same person for three years, our families knew, and we went out together frequently. I never felt it was necessary to display our relationship publicly on the red carpet or anything like that.”

In the years that followed, Harris would often respond with “maybe someday” when talking about the possibility of having children.

In 2010, the Uncoupled star and Burtka welcomed twins: their son, Gideon, and their daughter, Harper.

Announcing their arrival, Harris tweeted on X (formerly known as Twitter): “All of us are happy, healthy, tired, and a little pukey.”

Earlier, Burtka had shared that the couple had always known they wanted to have children together.

The couple, who married in 2014, co-wrote an essay for Out magazine. In it, Burtka wrote, “Even on that first date, we talked about having kids. If he hadn’t wanted children, I don’t think we’d be together.”

Harris and Burtka recently spoke about parenting their teenage twins, describing them as “good kids.”

“We keep being told that at some point, they’re going to hate us,” he joked in a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight.

“That hasn’t happened yet. So, you know, so far, so good!”

Burtka agreed, saying, “They’re good kids. We’ve done a good job. You put in the work, and you get it back, you know?”

Harris and Burtka’s twins were carried by a surrogate, with both men contributing sperm. This means either of the twins could be biologically related to either Harris or Burtka.

Now, the Starship Troopers star has explained why he doesn’t want to know which twin is biologically his.

Despite Harris’ stance, some detectives believe they have figured out which twin belongs to whom.

One person speculated on Facebook: “They both resemble his husband, so they’re probably not biologically his. But he’s their dad regardless! Love NP

Another person agreed, writing: “He doesn’t need to know; we all see that Harper has David’s face lol. At least I get to know, haha!”

A third person commented: “The boy is his absolute double, while the girl resembles his husband, especially around her nose and mouth.”

“Regardless, they’re both his kids, so it doesn’t matter!” someone else said.

Harris made these comments in 2014 when his children were four years old and continues to hold this viewpoint to this day.

He states: “I have no interest in [finding out]. We are their parents, and I love them unconditionally.”

“We used one of my sperm and one of David’s sperm to fertilize two eggs, hoping that both would take because we both wanted to be biological dads.”

“Both eggs took, miraculously.”
