Disney’s Goofy is ‘not a dog’, says character’s voice actor of 33 years

The enduring argument about the voice actor for one of Disney’s most iconic characters has ultimately been resolved.

While it’s common knowledge that Mickey Mouse is undoubtedly a mouse and Donald Duck is unmistakably a duck, the question remains: What about Goofy?

On the surface, the answer seems apparent. Introduced in 1932 as “Dippy Dawg,” it would naturally suggest that the character is a dog, wouldn’t it? Or at the very least, unquestionably a canine… correct?

Yet, any Disney enthusiast worth their salt will promptly highlight the complexity of Goofy’s species, especially when considering the existence of Mickey’s pet dog Pluto. Unlike Goofy, Pluto lacks the human-like qualities, walking on all fours, remaining non-verbal, being treated as a typical dog, and frequently appearing in a doghouse or on a leash.

There has also been persistent speculation about Goofy being potentially identified as a cow, spurred by his on/off-again romantic involvement with the similarly-proportioned Clarabelle Cow, who, as the name implies, is unquestionably a cow.

To settle the matter definitively, Yahoo Entertainment interviewed Bill Farmer, the longstanding voice actor for Goofy, and sought his insights on the subject.

“Goofy is not a dog,” Farmer asserted with unwavering authority. “Pluto is a dog, but Goofy appears to belong to the canine family, much like a wolf is not a dog, yet they both fall within the canine family.”

“I believe ‘Canis Goofus’ is the technical Latin term for what Goofy is,” Farmer added.

Perhaps the most straightforward response we’ll receive on this matter is Farmer’s declaration to the world: “He’s just Goofy.”

There you have it! From the man himself, Goofy is confirmed to be a type of canine, but very specifically not a dog.

Farmer has served as the voice of Goofy since 1987, although the voice actor revealed that he initially auditioned for the role of Mickey Mouse.

“I thought I did a pretty good Mickey Mouse,” he shared with Yahoo, before showcasing his Mickey voice. “I can’t do Donald Duck very well. But Goofy was right in the wheelhouse. They liked that one, and since 1987, I’ve been the official voice.”

Farmer left his mark on the character with the release of 1992’s Goof Troop, which reimagined Goofy as a hapless single dad navigating the challenges of raising his rebellious young son, Max.

Three years later, he took center stage in “A Goofy Movie,” a film that continues to be a fan favorite even after more than 25 years since its initial release.

Farmer mentions that even after all these years, people still approach him to express how much they relate to the father-son dynamic between Max and his Dad and how it has aided them in coming to terms with their own parental relationships.

In another part of the interview, Farmer also shares his thoughts on another enduring conspiracy theory surrounding the character.

“We don’t know who [Max’s] mother was,” he jokes. “But I have my own theories: I think Goofy was married to Jessica Rabbit before Roger.”

There you have it. Goofy is not a dog; he’s just… Goofy.
