Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia De Rossi are living in England and plan to sell their U.S. home, according to multiple reports. Find out why.
Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi, are leaving the United States and starting a new chapter abroad.
According to multiple reports from November 20, the couple has relocated to England and is preparing to sell their Montecito, California, home. Sources suggest their decision was influenced by the recent U.S. presidential election, where former President Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harrisโwhom Ellen had publicly endorsed earlier this month.
E! News has reached out to Ellen and Portia’s representatives for comment but has yet to receive a response.
It appears the couple, married since 2008, is already adjusting to life in England. Last week, they were spotted at British host Jeremy Clarkson’s pub, The Farmerโs Dog, in Burford.
In a video shared on Instagram by Clarkson’s girlfriend, Lisa Hogan, Ellen and Portia were seen enjoying an acoustic performance by The Corrs. They were joined by singer Natalie Imbruglia, famed for her 1997 hit Torn, who frequently tours with the Irish band.
Over the years, Ellen DeGeneres has owned several luxurious properties in California, including in Montecitoโhome to notable neighbors like Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, and Oprah Winfrey. However, reports from TheWrap and TMZ indicate that she and Portia have recently relocated to the Cotswolds, a picturesque and celebrity-favored region in England that includes the charming town of Burford.
The 66-year-old comedian and talk show host has mostly stayed out of the limelight in recent years. In 2022, she concluded The Ellen DeGeneres Show after an impressive 19-season run. The decision followed an internal investigation into claims of a “toxic work environment,” which led to the departure of three senior staff members in 2020.
Ellen publicly addressed the controversy on her show at the time, stating, “We have made the necessary changes, and today we are starting a new chapter.”
More recently, Ellen hinted at her departure from the entertainment industry altogether. During a stand-up comedy show in Santa Rosa, California, this past July, a fan asked if she had plans to appear on Broadway or in films. Ellenโs response was definitive:
“Um, no,” she said, as reported by SFGATE. “This is the last time you’re going to see me. After my Netflix special, I’m done.”
Ellen DeGeneres marked the end of her storied career with her Netflix special, Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, which premiered in September and was described as the “final comedy special of her historic career.”
In the special, the Finding Dory star reflected on her exit from the entertainment world with her trademark humor. “I got kicked out of show business. Yeah, ’cause I’m mean,” she joked. “You can’t be mean and be in show business. No, they’ll kick you out. No mean people in show business.”
Ellen also spoke about her deep connection to The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “I loved my show,” she shared. “It was a family to me.”
Reflecting on her legacy, she added, “I have a choice of people remembering me as someone who is mean, or someone who is beloved. I choose that.”
