Fans are concerned that the new Scary Movie won’t be funny because “people can’t take a joke anymore.”
The Scary Movie series released five films between 2000 and 2013, satirizing and poking fun at the popular horror tropes of the era.
The original Scary Movie series was created by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans.
Keenen Ivory Wayans wrote and directed the first two Scary Movie films, while Marlon and Shawn Wayans contributed as writers and stars in those installments.
Although the franchise wasn’t known for critical acclaim, it was a commercial success, grossing $830 million worldwide at the box office, according to The Numbers.
It has recently been announced that a new installment of the Scary Movie franchise is in the works, but fans are already expressing concerns about it.
The news was officially confirmed at CinemaCon, with the film slated to begin production later this year and aiming for a 2025 release, according to Deadline.
The long-awaited reboot is finally in the works, marking the first collaboration among the Wayans brothers in 18 years.
This new installment will feature an original screenplay, continuing the tradition of the earlier films by humorously spoofing slasher classics like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Production on the new Scary Movie is set to begin next year, with a theatrical release planned. The Wayans brothers, alongside Rick Alvarez, will write and produce the film.
Miramax’s Jonathan Glickman shared his excitement in a statement to Deadline: “We are thrilled to reunite Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise. The timing is perfect to bring the series back to the big screen, and we’re fortunate to have Keenen, Marlon, and Shawn’s unique comedic vision to entertain audiences worldwide.”
The Wayans brothers shared their excitement about the new Scary Movie, saying: “We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again. This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago.
“We remember people laughing in the aisles, and we hope to see that happen again. We’re looking forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs back to theaters, where they belong. It’s a double reunion.”
With the Scary Movie franchise known for lampooning current horror trends, the new film will have no shortage of material, especially considering the past decade has delivered some of the genre’s most critically acclaimed hits.
Mike Flanagan has become a prominent figure with his hit horror series, including Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher, while films like A Quiet Place and IT have dominated the box office.
Despite the excitement surrounding the upcoming movie, fans have expressed concerns, particularly about whether modern audiences will take issue with its humor.
One person on social media commented: “Won’t be the same because the easily offended no doubt will be offended, so the close-to-the-edge jokes probably won’t make it… Hope it’s good though.”
“It won’t be the same; that was a different generation,” added another user.
A third user wrote: “There’s no way they can make them now with the humor they used to have in it.”
Another person wrote: “It will be s**t. People complain too much, so nothing gets made the same anymore without offending someone.”
