A decade ago, friends Kris Kremers and Lisanne Froon disappeared during a hike on Panama’s ‘El Pianista’ trail.
They went missing on April 1, 2014, and it took several months before their body parts were discovered.
Kremers, 21, and Froon, 22, had been planning the hike for months and are thought to have traversed a forested area near the Baru volcano in Boquete, Panama.
However, they were never seen alive again, and despite an extensive search, it wasn’t until June that additional clues were uncovered.
Someone turned in Froon’s backpack, claiming to have found it by a riverbank. The backpack contained money, water, two phones, and a camera.
The phones revealed that around six hours into the hike, both devices had been used in an attempt to call emergency services. However, due to a lack of signal, the calls were never completed.
The women had dialed 112, an international emergency number, and 911, Panama’s national emergency number.
Further investigation revealed that Froon’s Samsung Galaxy S III ran out of battery on April 4 and was not used again.
Meanwhile, Kremers’ iPhone 4 was turned on and off intermittently between April 5 and April 11, but the correct PIN code was never entered.
This could suggest that someone was either repeatedly entering the wrong PIN or simply checking the phone to see if there was any signal.
Kremers’ iPhone was switched off for the final time on April 11.
Among the photos found on the camera were disturbing images that suggested an accident may have occurred.
