Keanu Reeves has just revealed that he’s been accidentally married to Winona Ryder for the past 30 years.
The Matrix and John Wick star, 60, has long been affectionately known as ‘the internet’s boyfriend,’ but he has never been officially married.
Or so it seemed.
It seems the actor might have spent the last thirty years unintentionally married to his co-star, Winona Ryder.
You might be asking yourself how something like this could happen. The answer? On the set of a gothic horror film, naturally!
In 1992, Ryder and Reeves starred together in Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of Dracula, with Gary Oldman portraying the iconic villain. While the film garnered mixed reviews at its release, it now holds a special place in the hearts of both Reeves and Ryder.
In the film, their characters, Mina and Jonathan Harker, get married. However, it seems that their on-set union might have turned out to be more lasting than they initially intended.
During an interview for their 2018 film Destination Wedding, Ryder revealed that Coppola had enlisted a real Romanian priest to perform the wedding ceremony in the film.
“We actually got married in Dracula. I swear, I think we’re married in real life too. In that scene, Francis used a real Romanian priest,” she mentioned during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
“We filmed the whole ceremony, and he performed the entire ritual. So, I guess you could say we’re married.”
Reeves also tackled the rumors in an Esquire interview, humorously noting, “We filmed an entire marriage ceremony with actual priests.”
“Winona says we’re married, Coppola says we’re married, so I suppose we’re wed in the eyes of God.”
Although the two are considered married in the eyes of God, they have never actually dated in real life. Ryder is famously known for her high-profile relationship with Johnny Depp in the 90s. They first met in 1989 and dated for four years before breaking up, during which Depp got his infamous ‘Winona Forever’ tattoo. Since then, Ryder has been in a relationship with Scott Mackinlay Hahn, whom she has been with since 2011.
Meanwhile, Reeves had an on-again, off-again relationship with actress and record company executive Jennifer Syme from 1998 to 2001. Tragically, Syme passed away in 2001. Reeves is currently reported to be in a relationship with visual artist Alexandra Grant.
It’s unclear whether the pair ever needed to dissolve their marriage, given their legal status, but the story remains a fascinating piece of trivia from the 1992 film.
