Lily Allen has shared the heartbreaking reason she had to part ways with her beloved family dog.
The 39-year-old ‘Smile’ singer, who initially adopted the dog for her New York townhouse, revealed she had no choice but to return the little pooch to its previous home.
In her BBC-commissioned Miss Me? podcast with Miquita Oliver, Allen disclosed that the pet joined her children, Ethel Mary Cooper, 12, and Marnie Rose Cooper, 11.
She shares her children with her ex-husband Sam Cooper. The couple married in 2011 and divorced in 2018.
Allen explained, “We did adopt a dog, but then it chewed up my passport, so I ended up returning her.”
“She chewed up all three of our passports, which had our visas in them.”
“And I can’t even describe how much it cost to replace everything. It was during Covid, so it was an absolute logistical nightmare.”
“And since the father of my children lives in England, I couldn’t take them back to visit him for about four or five months because this damn dog had eaten the passports.”
“And I just couldn’t look at her. I thought, ‘You’ve ruined my life.'”
Allen explained why she still has her ex-husband’s name on her passport, saying, “I kept my ex-husband’s name because I have two children with him.”
“Traveling with children can be challenging if you don’t share the same surname.”
In July, the singer revealed that she broke down in tears for 90 minutes after saying goodbye to her children, who left for a two-month summer camp.
She said, “We dropped the kids off, and it was wonderful. It was so sweet, and I’m really glad we got them there on time.”
“I told David, ‘I was so harsh with them, so short-tempered, and I didn’t hug them enough. They don’t have phones, so I can’t talk to them for a whole month—they’re really gone.'”
“We can only write letters to each other—that’s it. I can’t call them, and they can’t call me.”
Her co-host suggested it would be a valuable experience for Allen and her children, to which she agreed: “It will be good, and it was transformative for them last year, so I know they’ll have a great time.”
“I’m sure they’ll enjoy it.”
