The series has received high praise from fans, with many continuing to rewatch all five seasons.
Viewers were captivated from the very first episode. One fan shared their excitement, saying, “The best show in recent years: action, realism, drama, trust and betrayal, love, and slow burn… it has everything to keep you hooked. The main cast’s performance is outstanding!”
Another fan raves, “One of the best series I have ever seen. A truly powerful show. I loved it, and the acting was excellent. I recommend it to everyone.”
A third viewer shares, “My friend suggested this show, and I believe it’s worth it. Once I started watching, I became more and more curious to see what happens next. It’s addictive!”
A fourth viewer adds, “Love the show—I’ve been watching since Season 1 and have never been disappointed. The acting is amazing.”
A fifth fan chimes in, “It’s my favorite TV show. The characters are devious, diabolical, and intelligent. Completely unpredictable with enough twists, turns, and subplots to keep you hooked.”
Director Joshua John Miller co-created the hit show with his writing partner, M.A. Fortin.
The series is an American crime drama adapted from the Spanish-language telenovela La Reina del Sur, which itself is based on the novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte.
Brazilian actress Alice Braga, known for her roles in Dark Matter and I Am Legend, plays the lead in the series. She stars alongside Peter Gadiot and Mexican actress Veronica Falcón.
This USA Network original has earned an IMDb score of 8/10 and a 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The show’s synopsis reads: “Teresa flees Mexico after her drug-runner boyfriend is murdered. Settling in Dallas, she aims to become the country’s top drug smuggler and avenge her lover’s death.”
The novel La Reina del Sur, which inspired the series, is based on the real-life female drug lord Marllory Chacón. Her nickname, given by the Guatemalan press, inspired the title of the hit show.
She surrendered to U.S. authorities in 2014.
The first season premiered in 2016, yet new fans continue to discover the show, often binge-watching all five seasons.
The series, which surpassed expectations with its ratings in the first season, made a strong comeback for Season 2, attracting 2.11 million total viewers.
Lead actress Alice Braga spoke with Forbes about the significance of representation in the industry: “Having Latinos in front of the camera is important because… when they’re watching the show, they can see themselves in it.”
She continued, “There’s such a huge Latino community, but if we don’t have Latinos in the director’s chair, in the writer’s room, and in decision-making positions, like executive producers, we won’t get certain stories told from that perspective.”
Despite its popularity among fans, Queen of the South concluded after its fifth season.
The cancellation was a result of USA Network’s decision to shift away from original programming.
However, the series remains available for streaming on Netflix.
