The South Korean black comedy thriller film, directed by Bong Joon-ho, features a cast that includes Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, Jang Hye-jin, Park Myung-hoon, and Lee Jung-eun.

The story centers on a struggling family whose son secures a job with a wealthy household. In time, the entire family devises a plan to work for the same affluent home.

Upon its release, the film garnered widespread acclaim, winning several prestigious awards, including the Academy Award for Best Picture—making it the first non-English-language film to achieve this honor. It also received three additional Oscars for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film, among other accolades.

Exploring the divide between the wealthy and the impoverished, it is regarded as one of the greatest films ever made.

In an interview with The Talks, director Joon-ho shared his insights into the creative process that led to the creation of this ‘masterpiece’ of a thriller.

He stated: “… My thought process was that while humanity has made remarkable advancements—like the mobile devices we have today—if we reflect on the past 30 years, has the gap between the rich and the poor lessened? Not at all.

“As a father, I often wonder if things will get better for my son’s generation. Honestly, I don’t have much faith in that either. This uncertainty is a significant source of fear for me. So, I aimed to be truthful about that fear and sadness and to convey it effectively.”
